Farm Leaders Demand Stronger Support from Senate

Farm Leaders Demand Stronger Support from Senate

By Jamie Martin

American farmers are facing financial uncertainty and need stronger support from the government. During a Senate Agriculture Committee hearing, Farm Bureau President Zippy Duvall highlighted the urgent need for an updated farm bill that provides better financial aid and fair trade opportunities.

Duvall thanked lawmakers for recent aid but stressed that it is not enough. He pointed out that farmers are struggling to secure loans and manage rising production costs. “We are hearing that maybe 20% or more of our farmers are having difficulties getting operating loans.

We’re in a time where that should have already been done, and they should have seed in the barn, ready to start planting.”

Trade issues were another concern. Duvall emphasized the need for fair trade deals and market access, noting that farming depends on affordable imports like Canadian potash. He urged policymakers to prioritize trade agreements that benefit U.S. agriculture.

The discussion also covered the importance of science-based farming practices. Duvall explained that agricultural tools go through extensive testing and regulation, ensuring they are safe for farmers and consumers.

Risk management programs also need improvement. Many small farmers struggle to access these tools due to complex requirements. Duvall called for simpler, more inclusive policies to help all farmers.

Farm leaders hope lawmakers will act quickly to pass a farm bill that addresses these challenges and provides farmers with the support they need to sustain their livelihoods.
