4-H Youth Shine in National Livestock Contests

By Andi Anderson

Young participants from various regions showcased their skills in national 4-H livestock contests across the country over recent months. These events provided an opportunity for youth to demonstrate their knowledge, teamwork, and dedication to agriculture.

Dairy Contests in Kentucky

In Kentucky, a dedicated team represented their state in the dairy quiz bowl and dairy judging competitions at the North American International Livestock Exposition. The quiz bowl team earned their spot after winning at the state level, ultimately securing an honorable mention in the national contest. One member received special recognition for individual performance in the written test.

The dairy judging contest featured an all-star team selected based on state-level scores and eligibility. Competing against teams from across the nation, they ranked fourth overall. The team excelled in specific breed evaluations, securing top positions in Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, Guernsey, Holstein, and Jersey categories. A standout participant placed third overall in individual rankings, also earning top positions in reasons and breed-specific assessments.

Livestock Contests in Denver

The National Western Roundup in Denver hosted livestock judging and quiz bowl competitions, with teams qualifying through state-level events. One livestock judging team, with members who had been competing together since childhood, placed third in sheep evaluation and earned a strong overall ranking. Individual members received recognition for their performance in sheep judging and oral reasons.

Livestock judging requires participants to assess animals based on desirable traits and present their rankings to judges. Teams spend months preparing, often practicing on local farms. Their hard work was reflected in their national performance.

Another team participated in the livestock quiz bowl, testing their knowledge of beef, sheep, swine, and goats. Using buzzers, competitors answered questions in a double-elimination format, demonstrating their expertise and quick thinking.

Encouraging Growth in Agriculture

These competitions help youth build confidence, leadership, and communication skills. Participation is made possible through local and state-level competitions, with support from agricultural organizations. Events like these inspire future leaders in the livestock industry.
