Iowa takes steps to contain HPAI spread

Iowa takes steps to contain HPAI spread

By Andi Anderson

Gov. Kim Reynolds has extended a disaster proclamation for several counties in Iowa, including O’Brien, Palo Alto, Sac, Sioux, and Worth, effective through February 1, 2025. This follows the confirmation of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) cases in these areas by the USDA.

The proclamation activates state resources, including support from the Iowa Homeland Security and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, to help manage the situation. These efforts will focus on tracking and monitoring, early detection, containment, disposal, and disinfection processes. Additionally, the proclamation provides flexibility for commercial vehicles responding to affected locations.

While HPAI has been detected in birds, it does not pose an immediate risk to public health. Poultry products remain safe for consumption. Producers are urged to contact their veterinarians if they notice signs of HPAI in their flocks to prevent further spread.

This proactive measure ensures that resources are in place to protect both the agricultural industry and public health in these affected regions.
