Nearly 50 Iowa 4-H youth participated in an engaging event at Iowa State University’s Stephens Auditorium, exploring the connection between STEM and the arts. The event included pre-performance workshops, interactive art activities, and live demonstrations.
Interactive Workshops
Youth attended a workshop led by Clark Colby, 4-H arts, communication, and design specialist, along with Iowa State University partners. Participants learned about design elements and principles through creative activities. Each participant designed unique puzzle pieces inspired by poetry, objects, or animals, illustrating the elements of design as tools and principles as mentors guiding their creations.
The workshop emphasized creativity and self-expression, as noted by participant Kendell Cortum: “I learned it’s not a test and just for fun!” After completing their pieces, the youth assembled a collaborative puzzle, showcasing the power of teamwork.
Live Art Performance
Participants attended a performance by Artrageous, a group blending live art creation, music, and choreography. Youth learned about the science behind the show and interacted with performers during a Q&A session.
Sara Nelson, Iowa 4-H STEM specialist, remarked, “These events showcase the innovation process and careers available in STEM and the arts.”
Fostering Lifelong Learning
The event highlighted creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking while inspiring a love for lifelong learning. As participant Samuel Sindt shared, “It’s about seeing how creative you are—it’s not graded.”
Funded by the Iowa 4-H Foundation, this program connected youth with innovative experiences, sparking interest in STEM and arts careers. For more information, visit the Iowa 4-H website or contact your ISU Extension and Outreach office.
