Nineteen Iowa 4-H youth delegates joined over 750 participants at the 2024 National 4-H Congress held in Atlanta, Georgia, from November 29 to December 3. The event, a longstanding tradition organized by National 4-H Headquarters and the USDA, provided an enriching experience through workshops, motivational sessions, and community service opportunities.
This year’s theme, “Courage to Grow, Heart to Serve,” highlighted the importance of leadership and civic engagement. Delegates attended workshops on public speaking, service learning, virtual realities, and team building. Keynote speakers, including Dan Clark and Laymon Hicks, inspired participants with their stories and strategies for success.
A standout session led by John Beede introduced delegates to a seven-step process for building rapport, equipping them with tools to improve interpersonal skills and excel in interviews and teamwork. Delegates like Olivia Olson and Luci Kucera shared how the event boosted their confidence, emphasizing the importance of communication and staying present in the moment.
Community service was a core element of the Congress. Delegates worked on projects such as environmental clean-ups and gardening at the historic Oakland Cemetery, showcasing their commitment to making a difference.
Beyond workshops, participants enjoyed activities like a banquet, pin exchange, and tours of Atlanta attractions, fostering connections with peers from across the nation. Delegates returned with renewed enthusiasm and ideas to enhance their local 4-H clubs.
“This trip is transformational for young leaders, sparking passion and innovation,” said Katie Brandt, Hamilton County youth coordinator. Participation was supported by Iowa Farm Bureau, Iowa Pork, and the Iowa 4-H Foundation.
