USDA Increases Aid for Organic Dairy Farmers

USDA Increases Aid for Organic Dairy Farmers

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has released a second round of financial assistance amounting to $8.7 million for organic dairy producers under the Organic Dairy Marketing Assistance Program (ODMAP) 2024.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to stabilize the organic dairy sector amid fluctuating market conditions and escalating production costs.

The USDA aims to address the specific challenges faced by organic dairy farmers, including market volatility, higher input and transportation expenses, and an unstable feed supply.

The challenges are particularly acute in the organic dairy sector, prompting targeted support from federal programs.

The Farm Service Agency (FSA), the USDA division overseeing ODMAP, finalized the payments following a recent application period from September 30 to December 13.

The program is designed to calculate financial aid based on the marketing costs for organic milk that producers incurred in 2023 or their estimated costs for increasing milk production in 2024.

With $23 million already distributed in the first round, the total aid provided through ODMAP 2024 has now surpassed $31 million.

This substantial support underscores the USDA’s commitment to ensuring the sustainability and profitability of organic dairy operations across the United States.

ODMAP 2024's structure provides one-time cost-share payments, aiming to alleviate the immediate financial burdens of eligible producers.

By basing these payments on actual or projected marketing costs, the program ensures relevant and significant support tailored to the needs of each farm.

As organic dairy producers continue to navigate a complex economic landscape, the support from ODMAP 2024 is crucial.
