A new award has been introduced to honor veterans or active service members who excel in agriculture and make a positive impact on their communities. Retired Army Colonel Joe Ricker from Indiana is the first recipient of the American Farm Bureau's Veteran Farmer of Excellence Award.
After serving for 30 years in the Army, Ricker now dedicates himself to helping other veterans pursue careers in agriculture.
Ricker’s journey began in 1992 when he joined the Army through the ROTC program. He initially served as a reserve officer before transitioning to full-time service, where he completed tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.
His expertise in logistics has proven beneficial in his work in agriculture, particularly in managing farming operations and distribution networks.
Ricker’s efforts to engage veterans in agriculture include several avenues. He runs two non-profits, At Ease Orchard and Veterans IN Farming. At Ease Orchard focuses on beekeeping, while Veterans IN Farming offers a broader agricultural focus across the Midwest.
Both organizations provide classes and presentations, and Veterans IN Farming hosts a conference to support and educate veterans. Additionally, Ricker collaborates with AgrAbility, a program that assists individuals with disabilities in continuing their work in agriculture.
He believes that farming and ranching offer a therapeutic and structured lifestyle that resonates with veterans. Skills and routines learned in the military, such as discipline and quick problem-solving, translate well to the demands of agriculture, creating a sense of purpose and continuity for veterans.
Managing livestock or crops, he notes, can mirror the responsibility veterans are accustomed to in their service roles.
Ricker feels deeply honored to receive the award, which also provides him with new networking opportunities within the agricultural community. Support for this award comes from Farm Credit, and more information is available at fb.org.
