Agriculture’s inspiring women leaders celebrated

The 2024 Women in Ag Leadership Conference, held on December 4-5 in Ames, Iowa, celebrated the remarkable contributions of four women to the state’s agricultural community.

The Women Impacting Agriculture Award recognizes individuals who drive change, promote sustainability, and lead by example in agriculture and community service.

Honorees of 2024 Women Impacting Agriculture Award

Chris Cornelius

Chris Cornelius, a fourth-generation farmer and manager of Cornelius Seed, oversees a 3,200-acre farm and a cattle operation. Despite a farming accident in 1996, she became a passionate advocate for farm safety, sharing her story to raise awareness. Cornelius also leads as the president of the Independent Professional Seed Association Board and contributes significantly to conservation efforts.

Wendy Johnson

Wendy Johnson, co-manager of Joia Food Farm, champions sustainable farming through adaptive grazing and conservation. She co-founded the Clark Street Community Garden and Edible Arboretum, blending agriculture with community development. Johnson actively influences agricultural policies at state and national levels, promoting regenerative farming.

Julie Kenney

Julie Kenney, CEO of Agribusiness Associates of Iowa, is a strong advocate for sustainability and food security. She implements conservation practices on her farm and has contributed to policy development as Iowa’s Deputy Secretary of Agriculture. Kenney’s leadership bridges public and private sector advancements.

Janette Smith

Janette Smith, a leader at Landus, empowers women in grain marketing and launched the Landus direct ship program, benefiting farmers through better market access. She actively mentors women in agriculture and shares her expertise at industry events, fostering future leadership.

This recognition highlights the vital role of women in driving innovation and sustainability in agriculture while inspiring others to contribute to a better future for farming communities.
