The Iowa 4-H Youth Development program is calling on Iowa families to host Japanese youth delegates as part of the States’ 4-H Exchange program in summer 2025. The exchange will run from July 21 to August 16, and families do not need to be part of Iowa 4-H to participate.
Families with children aged 8-17 are eligible to host and will be paired with a Japanese youth of the same gender and a similar age. Applications are open until April 15, and host assignments will be made by June 1.
Host families are encouraged to share their everyday lives, as no special activities or sightseeing plans are required.
The exchange focuses on fostering cultural understanding through simple, shared experiences. Families will participate in welcome orientations and departure events organized by Iowa 4-H.
The program, established in 1972, has connected nearly 63,000 youth worldwide, with Iowa hosting since 1975.
The 2024 host families shared memorable moments from their experiences. The Kellen family highlighted vacations, local attractions like Maquoketa Caves, and cultural activities such as wearing yukatas and learning chopstick skills.
Similarly, the Lucas family enjoyed outdoor fun and language exchange, while the Lane family attended a wedding, offering their delegate a unique cultural perspective.
“This program is a wonderful opportunity to share cultures and build lasting connections,” said Madeleine Bretey-Smith, Iowa 4-H coordinator. “It promotes empathy, global awareness, and personal growth for everyone involved.”
