New Resource Supports Beef Producers

New Resource Supports Beef Producers

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Beef Center has released an updated publication designed to help beef producers make informed decisions about growth implant programs for their cattle operations. The resource provides valuable information on selecting and using growth implants to improve cattle performance and increase profitability.

Growth implants are among the most effective technologies available to beef producers. When used correctly, they can increase daily weight gain by up to 20%, improve feed efficiency by up to 15%, and reduce production costs by at least 10%. These benefits make growth implants an important management tool in modern beef production.

Aimee Wertz-Lutz, Iowa Beef Center director and extension feedlot specialist at Iowa State University, highlighted the importance of choosing the right implant strategy for different production systems.

She said, "As of spring 2026, more than 20 implant brands are available for growing-finishing cattle. And while implants with a similar active ingredient composition should yield somewhat similar responses, the decision on which to use should be based on price, convenience, availability, approval for the stage of production and general preference."

The updated publication provides detailed information on implant brand names, active ingredients, intended uses, and re-implant options. It focuses on cattle during the growing phase in drylot systems as well as cattle fed in confinement for slaughter. This information helps producers compare available products and select options that best fit their operational goals.

In addition to product comparisons, the guide explains proper implant administration and placement techniques. Correct application is important for achieving the desired growth response while maintaining animal health and performance.

The publication also outlines factors producers should consider when developing an implant program. These include production goals, cattle feeding systems, marketing strategies, product availability, and overall management preferences. By understanding these factors, producers can create more effective programs that maximize returns on investment.

Wertz-Lutz emphasized that implant timing also plays a critical role in achieving successful results. Producers should carefully evaluate implant schedules and select products appropriate for each stage of production.

She noted, "The publication focuses on implant brand names, active ingredients, intended use and whether a re-implant option exists for cattle in the 'growing beef cattle in a drylot' and 'growing beef cattle fed in confinement for slaughter' phases, respectively."

The updated guide further reminds producers that final implant decisions should align with their marketing plans and production objectives. Understanding available options can help cattle operations improve efficiency while meeting market requirements.

The publication, titled "Growth-Promoting Implants for Drylot Growing Beef Cattle and Cattle Fed in Confinement for Slaughter" (IBC 113), is available as a free PDF download through the Iowa State University Extension Store. The resource serves as a practical tool for producers seeking to enhance cattle growth performance and profitability through well-planned implant strategies.
