A community-focused agricultural event will bring people together for a special screening of the documentary Farming While Black. The event is being organized through a collaboration of several organizations dedicated to agriculture, food systems, and community development.
The program will take place at Lillyland Farm in Des Moines and is open to all community members at no cost. The event aims to encourage meaningful conversations about farming, food production, and equitable access to agricultural opportunities.
Following the film screening, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from local Black farmers during a panel discussion. The conversation will focus on important topics such as urban agriculture, land access, local food systems, and the real-life experiences of socially disadvantaged farmers. These discussions are expected to provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities within modern agriculture.
In addition to the educational program, guests will be offered a free meal prepared with locally sourced food. The meal will also include the superfood "Lenga Lenga," giving attendees the chance to enjoy nutritious food while learning more about community-based agriculture.
The event is supported by Iowa State University Urban Ag Program, Lillyland Farm, Cultivate Local Food Connections, LSI Global Greens, Iowa Wildcraft, The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation, and In Harmony Farm. Together, these organizations are working to promote awareness of sustainable farming practices, local food production, and community engagement.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket for comfortable outdoor seating during the film screening. The welcoming atmosphere is designed to create an enjoyable experience for individuals, families, students, and anyone interested in agriculture and food systems.
By combining education, discussion, and local food, the event provides an opportunity for people to connect with farmers and learn more about the role agriculture plays in building stronger communities. The screening and panel discussion will help raise awareness about farming experiences while encouraging conversations that support a more inclusive and sustainable agricultural future.
