The Iowa State Fair Weed Identification Contest is set to return on August 14, offering fair visitors a unique opportunity to test their knowledge of common weeds found across Iowa. Organized with support from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the ISU Department of Agronomy, the event combines education, competition, and agricultural awareness.
The contest will take place in front of the Agriculture Building and welcomes participants of all ages. Contestants will identify real weed samples displayed on tables and in pots. Participants only need to know the commonly accepted names of the weeds and are not required to identify scientific names.
To encourage broad participation, the competition is divided into three categories. The Future Agronomists division is open to youth under the age of 19 and requires identification of 20 common Iowa weeds. The General division challenges participants to identify 30 weeds, while the Professional division includes the same 30 weeds along with five additional difficult-to-identify species.
The event provides an exciting learning experience for students, farmers, gardening enthusiasts, and anyone interested in plant science. Participants can demonstrate their identification skills while learning more about weeds that commonly affect agricultural production and natural environments.
Following the competition, winners will be recognized during an awards ceremony held inside the Agriculture Building. The top five participants in each division will receive cash prizes and Iowa State Fair ribbons, making the contest both educational and rewarding.
Visitors can continue learning even after the competition ends. The weed samples featured in the contest, along with their common names and educational information, will remain on display throughout the duration of the fair. This exhibit allows fairgoers to explore different weed species and gain a better understanding of their characteristics.
Meaghan Anderson, extension field agronomist at Iowa State University and contest organizer, encouraged people to participate and sharpen their plant identification skills.
She said, “This summer is off to a great start with many weeds growing in the greenhouse in preparation for the contest. We invite all plant identification enthusiasts to see how their ID skills stack up against the best. The contest will have a variety of easy and common to very rare weedy species – start studying now!”
The annual contest continues to serve as an engaging way to promote agronomy education and raise awareness about weed management. By combining hands-on learning with friendly competition, the event encourages participants of all ages to develop a greater appreciation for agriculture and plant science.
With a range of weed species and multiple competition levels, the contest promises an enjoyable and informative experience for both beginners and experienced plant enthusiasts.
