Beef and forage producers looking to improve their fall management practices will have an opportunity to learn from agricultural experts at an upcoming pasture walk in Iowa.
Hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the educational event will take place at Sandeen Genetics in Blakesburg on September 9, 2026 and is designed to provide valuable information for strengthening forage and beef operations.
The pasture walk will focus on several important topics that can help producers enhance the productivity and long-term success of their farms.
Attendees will learn about pasture weed identification and management, an essential part of maintaining healthy grazing land. Proper weed control can help improve forage quality, increase pasture productivity, and reduce competition for nutrients and moisture.
Another major topic will be fall soil fertility planning. Understanding soil nutrient levels and making timely management decisions can improve pasture performance and support stronger forage growth in future seasons.
Producers will also receive information about replacement heifer selection, a key factor in building productive and profitable beef herds.
According to Logan McCrea, Field Agronomist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, fall provides an excellent opportunity to address important management issues that can benefit farms for years to come. McCrea said, “This pasture walk is an opportunity for producers to see and discuss several important fall management decisions that affect both forage and beef operations.”
He further emphasized the advantages of planning during the fall season, stating, “Fall can be one of the best times to address common pasture weeds, evaluate soil fertility needs and make management decisions that can improve productivity in the years ahead.”
The event will offer participants a chance to observe management practices in a field setting while engaging with agricultural professionals and fellow producers.
Such discussions can help farmers better understand practical solutions for common pasture and livestock challenges.
The pasture walk is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. and conclude at approximately 8 p.m. A meal will be provided during the event through sponsorship from South Ottumwa Savings Bank.
While pre-registration is not required, organizers strongly encourage participants to register in advance to assist with meal planning. Registration will also be available on-site on the day of the event.
This educational program aims to provide producers with practical knowledge and management strategies that can support healthier pastures, stronger cattle herds, and improved farm productivity in the years ahead.
