A sixth-generation farm family from Washington County, Iowa, is being recognized for its long-standing commitment to agriculture, conservation, community service, and livestock care. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig will present the prestigious Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award to the Knupp family during a special open house event.
The award honors Iowa livestock farmers who demonstrate excellence in caring for their animals, protecting natural resources, and serving as positive community leaders. The recognition highlights the Knupp family's dedication to agriculture and their lasting impact on the local farming community.
Marc and Mary Ann Knupp are part of a farming tradition that began in Washington County in 1854. Representing the sixth generation of the family on the land, Marc has spent more than five decades farming some of the same acreage he first rented and planted in 1975. Today, he operates independently while also serving as the primary operator of the Knupp & Sons grain business alongside his nephew, Tanner Knupp.
Livestock production has been a key part of the family's history. Following World War II, Marc's father raised cattle and hogs, and later Marc and his brother Carl expanded the operation with a farrow-to-finish hog business. Over time, the operation evolved into contract hog finishing, and today the family's livestock facilities are being transitioned to the next generation.
The Knupp family has consistently embraced innovation and diversification. Along with producing corn and soybeans, Marc has grown seed corn, seed soybeans, and specialty plots for Corteva. During difficult market conditions in the 1980s, the family diversified further by growing tomatoes for Heinz, demonstrating a willingness to adapt and pursue new opportunities.
Conservation remains a central value on the farm. The family uses filter strips, terraces, grassed waterways, minimum tillage practices, and cereal rye cover crops to protect soil and improve sustainability. Their goal is to leave the land in better condition for future generations.
Recognizing these efforts, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig said, “Six generations on the farm represents an incredible legacy, but what stands out about the Knupp family is their willingness to continually adapt while staying rooted in the values that have sustained their family for generations. Marc and Mary Ann have embraced new opportunities, cared for their land and livestock and invested countless hours in their community while creating opportunities for the next generation to lead. That same spirit is evident throughout the Knupp family, whether they're farming, building agricultural businesses or serving agriculture at the local and national levels. Their commitment to leaving their farm and community stronger for future generations makes them very deserving of the Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award.”
The extended Knupp family remains actively involved in a variety of agricultural enterprises, including crop production, livestock management, trucking, and agricultural services. Younger family members are increasingly taking leadership roles, ensuring the continuation of the family's farming legacy.
Beyond farming, Marc and Mary Ann have contributed significantly to local organizations and agricultural groups. They have served in leadership positions with corn and soybean associations, county fair organizations, school boards, Farm Bureau groups, and numerous community programs. Their efforts have helped strengthen agriculture and rural communities throughout the region.
The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award, now in its 22nd year, celebrates farmers who combine responsible livestock care, environmental stewardship, and community leadership. The Knupp family's dedication to these values makes them a deserving example of excellence in Iowa agriculture and a model for future generations of farmers.
