The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $17 million in four rural Iowa counties to support economic development, job creation, and healthcare. The funding will be used to renovate a hospital, build a nursing home, and support a startup business.
Three of the projects have received funding through the Rural Economic Development Loan and Grant Program:
• Pocahontas Community Hospital Upgrade:
Corn Belt Power Cooperative has secured a $1,232,000 loan to support Pocahontas Community Hospital in Pocahontas County. This funding will facilitate the renovation of patient exam rooms, pharmacy facilities, work/business office reception areas, and the construction of a 230 square-foot addition. The project's completion will elevate patient accessibility, empower healthcare professionals, and invigorate the rural economy.
• Sedes Group's Venture:
Northeast Missouri Electric Power Cooperative is providing a $2,000,000 loan to Sedes Group LLC, a Boone County, Missouri-based Limited Liability Company. The loan will fund equipment installation for a startup business in Centerville, Appanoose County, Iowa. Sedes Group LLC's mission is to develop animal feed and human-grade consumption products from organic and non-GMO soybeans. This innovative initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth.
• Revitalizing Hawarden's Businesses:
Hawarden Municipal Utilities is receiving a $124,000 grant to expand a revolving loan fund. This initiative aims to provide financing to five local businesses in Sioux County. The project's success will foster employment stability and contribute to the economic advancement of the Hawarden community.
The fourth project is supported by the Community Facilities Direct Loan & Grant Program:
• Enhancing Healthcare Facilities: Aase Haugen Homes Inc. in Decorah is benefiting from a $12,735,000 loan and a $1,000,000 grant. This funding will contribute to the construction of a nursing home featuring assisted living and dementia care units in Winneshiek County. The project's completion will elevate healthcare standards and services for residents in the rural and surrounding areas.
Rural Development Outreach:
USDA Rural Development has established 11 offices across Iowa to serve the state's rural population. With locations spanning from Des Moines to Tipton and Waverly, these offices are dedicated to promoting economic growth, job creation, and improved quality of life for Iowa's rural inhabitants.
Under the guidance of the Biden-Harris Administration, USDA Rural Development remains steadfast in its commitment to providing loans and grants that amplify economic opportunities, create jobs, and enhance the quality of life for rural Americans.
The impact of this assistance is evident in infrastructure improvements, business development, housing initiatives, and improved access to critical services such as healthcare and high-speed internet in rural, Tribal, and high-poverty areas.
