In Clinton, Iowa, a local program is proving that simple steps can make a big difference. Walk with Ease, launched by YWCA Clinton in partnership with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s LEAP initiative, is helping residents stay active, connected, and healthy.
For a 91-year-old participant, the twice-weekly walks are more than just exercise. They offer her a sense of belonging and access to fresh produce she didn’t have before. “She’s more mobile now, and the social connection has meant the most,” said LuAnn Larson, health and wellness manager at YWCA Clinton.
Walk with Ease, supported by the Arthritis Foundation, focuses on improving mobility, managing arthritis, preventing falls, and building sustainable fitness habits. The program meets twice weekly for nine weeks, showing participants how regular walking and wellness education can make a lasting difference.
A unique feature of the Clinton program is its partnership with the Iowa Community HUB, which delivers fresh produce directly to participants’ homes. This bonus helps participants improve their nutrition while staying motivated. Kathleen Pennock, a participant, shared, “Knowing the produce box is coming encourages me to eat healthier. The accountability makes a difference.”
LEAP — Leveraging Activities and Partnerships to Address Obesity in Iowa — is funded by the CDC’s High Obesity Program. It promotes long-term community change through policy, environmental, and system improvements. Dawn Dunnegan, a health and human sciences educator with ISU Extension, played a key role in bringing the program to Clinton.
The program’s success shows that promoting health doesn’t need expensive facilities — just people willing to come together. “People are showing up consistently,” Larson said. “They’re motivated and feel empowered to manage their health.”
Clinton’s first session is wrapping up, but there are plans to continue offering it twice a year. “Our goal is lasting access to safe physical activity,” said Allie Taiber, LEAP program specialist.
