Regional event explores livestock integration and soil health management
By Andy Anderson
Farmers, conservation professionals, and students are invited to explore the vital link between livestock and soil health at a two-day regional training event titled “Soil Health and Livestock: The Above and Below Ground Benefits of Livestock on the Land.” The workshop will be held October 22–23, 2025, at the Alliant Energy Ag Innovation Lab in Ames, Iowa.
Hosted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in collaboration with the Soil Health Nexus, the event will focus on how integrating livestock into farming systems enhances soil structure, water retention, and nutrient cycling—key elements of long-term sustainability.
Registration is open through October 15, 2025, with an early rate of $75 for both days or $50 for one day. After October 10, prices increase to $99 and $60, respectively. Fees include meals, snacks, and materials. Registration is managed by Michigan State University through the provided online link.
Event highlights include presentations from expert speakers across Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Kansas, an outdoor classroom on soil interpretation, and demonstrations of soil health tools and apps. Participants will engage in interactive planning sessions focused on cover crops, extended rotations, and forage systems while learning from Iowa farmers who have successfully integrated livestock into their operations.
A special showing of Practical Farmers of Iowa’s film “Livestock on the Land” will also be featured, offering real-world examples of sustainable grazing and regenerative practices. Attendees can earn **Continuing Education Units (CEUs)**—four in Soil and Water Management and two in Crop Management.
