Laura Brecht Wins Golden Owl Award for Ag Education

Laura Brecht Wins Golden Owl Award for Ag Education

By Andi Anderson

Prairie High School Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor Laura Brecht has been recognized with the prestigious Golden Owl Award, presented by the Iowa FFA Foundation and Nationwide. This award honors agricultural educators across Iowa for their dedication to shaping future agricultural leaders.

Brecht is one of seven finalists selected for the award. Each honoree receives $500 and an engraved plaque and will be recognized at the State FFA Convention in April in Ames. The Iowa Ag Teacher of the Year will be announced at the convention and will receive $3,000 and a Golden Owl trophy.

Since joining Prairie High School, Brecht has made a significant impact on the agriculture program. In less than five years, she has helped grow the school’s FFA chapter to the fourth largest in Iowa, increasing student enrollment from 146 to 250 students.

Her commitment to student success extends beyond the classroom, as she helps students with internships, contests, and FFA degrees.

“Laura is always finding ways to support her students and their passions,” said Kristy Thomann, 9th Grade Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor. “She stays late to help students with degrees, contests, and career opportunities.”

The Golden Owl Award recognizes educators for their efforts in the past school year and may be earned multiple times by teachers who continue to innovate in agricultural education.

“Great teachers matter,” said Superintendent Dr. Doug Wheeler. “The hours they invest in students are incredible, and I truly appreciate the dedication of Laura, Kristy, and their students.”

Brecht’s achievement highlights the importance of agriculture education in preparing students for future careers and fostering leadership in the industry.
