Iowa Workshops Help Farmers Improve Fertilizer and Financial Decisions

By Andi Anderson

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering a series of Fertilizer and Finance workshops across Iowa to help farmers and agricultural professionals make informed nutrient management decisions, addressing challenges related to high fertilizer costs while helping participants improve profitability and maximize returns on fertilizer investments.

The educational sessions will provide practical information on fertilizer cost trends, soil testing, nutrient management, and financial planning. Farmers, crop advisers, agricultural lenders, and other industry professionals will gain valuable insights into making fertilizer decisions that balance agronomic needs with economic considerations.

Participants will learn how to interpret soil test results more effectively to develop phosphorus, potassium, and lime recommendations. The workshops will also cover fertilizer budgeting strategies that can help producers get the best value from every dollar spent on crop nutrition. By understanding both production and financial factors, attendees will be better prepared to make informed management decisions.

Rebecca Vittetoe, Extension Field Agronomist at Iowa State University, highlighted the purpose of the program. She said, "The goal is to help producers make confident decisions about where fertilizer dollars will have the greatest impact. By combining fertility management principles with financial analysis, participants will gain tools they can use to evaluate costs, manage risk and maximize returns."

Three workshops will be held in different regions of Iowa during August. The Northern Iowa workshop will take place on Aug. 25 at the ISU Extension and Outreach Cerro Gordo County office in Mason City. It will be led by Extension Field Agronomist Angie Rieck-Hinz and Extension Farm Management Specialist Eric Weuve.

The Eastern Iowa workshop is scheduled for Aug. 26 at the ISU Extension and Outreach Johnson County office in Iowa City. The session will be presented by Extension Field Agronomist Rebecca Vittetoe and Extension Farm Management Specialist Ryan Drollette.

The Central Iowa workshop will be held on Aug. 27 at the Town Craft Gallery in Perry. The program will be led by Extension Field Agronomist Meaghan Anderson and Extension Farm Management Specialist Patrick Hatting.

Registration for each workshop is $60 per person, and participants are encouraged to complete registration at least three business days before the event. Additional information is available through the respective hosting county extension offices.

By combining nutrient management education with financial planning strategies, these workshops aim to help agricultural professionals make stronger fertilizer investment decisions, manage production costs more effectively, and support long-term farm profitability.
