The Iowa Renewable Fuels Association (IRFA) summit gathered industry leaders in Altoona to discuss the future of biofuels. With the theme “fuels of opportunity,” experts focused on expanding ethanol markets and securing year-round E15 sales.
Monte Shaw, executive director of IRFA, highlighted concerns about the state of the rural economy. He pointed to U.S. Department of Agriculture data predicting a $90 billion drop in net farm income between 2023 and 2024, a decline worse than that of the 1980s.
Shaw emphasized that biofuels played a key role in helping farmers recover from past economic crises. He urged leaders to look forward, targeting new markets such as sustainable aviation fuel and expanded biofuel demand.
The most pressing issue is securing Congressional approval for year-round E15 sales, a move that would benefit both farmers and consumers.
“It is time to fix E15 now,” Shaw stated. “No more delays, no more Iowa nice. We are done waiting.”
Shaw stressed that expanded E15 sales would increase demand, reduce fuel costs for consumers, and strengthen energy independence. He also highlighted the importance of conservation farming and carbon sequestration to ensure future market growth.
At the event, IRFA provided a petition for attendees to sign, urging House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune to support year-round E15 sales.
With strong industry backing, Iowa’s biofuel sector remains committed to advancing ethanol markets and ensuring the long-term success of rural communities.
