Farmland Leasing Workshop Helps Strengthen Farm Agreements

By Andi Anderson

A Farmland Leasing Arrangements Workshop is scheduled for August 12,2026, at 1:30 p.m. in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Organized by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Webster County, the event aims to guide landowners, tenants, and agricultural professionals in understanding leasing agreements and improving farm relationships.

Participants are required to register by August 10 through the Webster County Extension Office. A registration fee of $25 can be paid on the day of the event, while late registrations will include an additional $5 charge. The workshop will be held at the Webster County Extension Office located at 822 Central Ave.

The session is designed for both experienced participants and newcomers involved in farmland ownership or farm operations. It will cover key topics such as land values, market outlook, cash rental trends, cost of production, and methods of determining fair rental rates. In addition, the workshop will address legal updates and communication strategies between landowners and tenants.

Ann Johanns, program specialist at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, highlighted the importance of such programs. She said, “More than half of Iowa’s farmland is rented, and strong landowner/tenant relationships are important for the long-term viability of Iowa’s valuable farmland. A vital asset that affects the state’s overall economy.”

Recent data shows that the average cash rental rate for Iowa farmland declined slightly by 0.4% in 2026 to $270 per acre. This marks the second decline since 2019, indicating stable yet cautious market conditions.

The workshop will also discuss how factors like input costs and market trends influence future rental rates. Farm Management Field Specialists will address common concerns related to lease agreements and succession planning.

Each participant will receive a detailed workbook containing sample lease agreements, surveys, and useful resources. Overall, the program aims to strengthen knowledge, improve communication, and support better decision-making in farmland leasing.
