Extending Days on Feed May Boost Profitability for Cattle Feeders

Cattle feeders may benefit from extending days on feed, as research suggests that a significant portion of late-stage weight gain is in the form of carcass weight. This strategy is particularly effective for feeders selling cattle on a carcass-weight basis rather than live weight.

Grant Crawford, associate director at Merck Animal Health, discussed this topic at the 2025 Feedlot Forum in Iowa. He noted that with low grain prices, high fed cattle prices, and expensive feeder cattle, keeping cattle in the feedlot longer may be a better financial decision than purchasing new lighter-weight feeders.

Research indicates that 75% of live weight gain during extended feeding is converted into carcass weight. Steers, for example, gain approximately 2 lbs/day in carcass weight and 2.6 lbs/day in live weight during extended feeding periods. These numbers can help producers predict feed costs and potential profits.

However, selling cattle on a grid basis adds risk. While extending feeding can improve quality grades like Prime and Certified Angus Beef, it can also lead to discounts for overweight carcasses or high Yield Grades (4 and 5).

Heifers mature earlier than steers, meaning they may reach discount thresholds sooner and are less efficient in extended feeding periods.

Crawford emphasized that while current market conditions make extending feed days profitable, future changes in feed costs and cattle prices could reduce this advantage. He advised producers to analyze past data, including carcass weights, feed intake, and mortality rates, before making decisions.

Environmental factors like mud, heat stress, and cold stress can also impact cattle performance. Larger cattle can strain pens, fences, and feeders, increasing operational risks.

Crawford concluded with a reminder: feeding cattle longer carries risks, and market-ready losses can be costly. Careful analysis and market awareness are key to making this strategy work.
