Beef producers are invited to attend the All Things Beef winter workshop on December 18 in Marshalltown.
This session, part of a series by Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach, will address updates on animal identification regulations and strategies for managing winter nutrition in herds.
Chris Clark, ISU Extension beef specialist, will lead the session. He will discuss recently implemented rules requiring electronic ID tags for breeding stock and cattle crossing state lines. Additionally, there will be a brief overview of current guidelines on growth-promoting implants.
“We’ll review the new ID rules and cover some practical ideas for balancing rations and feeding cows during winter,” Clark shared. “Winter feed costs are often the largest expense, so reviewing best practices is always helpful.”
The workshop will take place at the ISU Extension and Outreach Marshall County office, located at 2608 S 2nd St., Marshalltown, starting at 5:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to RSVP to Chelsea Llewellyn by email at chelsea@iastate.edu, by phone at 641-752-1551, or via text at 515-344-3756. Admission is free, and a light supper will be provided.
This workshop is the second in the All Things Beef winter series. Upcoming sessions include a calving workshop on January 22, 2025, and a session on artificial insemination and estrus synchronization basics on February 19, 2025. All events will be held at the same location, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Producers will gain valuable insights into regulatory changes and practical feeding strategies to optimize herd health and reduce costs. These sessions are an excellent opportunity to enhance knowledge and improve herd management practices.
