The Cornbelt Cow-Calf Conference, Iowa’s leading educational event for cow-calf producers, is returning for its 53rd year on January 25, 2025.
Hosted at the Bridge View Center in Ottumwa, this free event promises a day filled with expert presentations and interactive learning opportunities, made possible by trade show vendors.
Patrick Wall, beef specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, emphasizes the significance of this year’s program. “Our keynote speaker, Joe Leathers, will share insights on managing the renowned 6666 Ranch and new marketing transitions under Taylor Sheridan’s ownership,” Wall stated.
The day begins with a presentation by Dr. Joe Dalton from the University of Idaho on optimizing natural service, a topic often overlooked by producers.
Following this, Dr. Troy Rowan from the University of Tennessee will discuss maternal genetics and their impact on herd longevity. The keynote address by Joe Leathers will conclude the morning session before lunch is served.
An exciting interactive event awaits attendees during lunch. Participants will describe their bull purchasing strategies, and a broker will simulate an online bull sale based on their budgets and operational needs. This exercise often highlights discrepancies between producers’ goals and actual purchases, offering valuable lessons.
Afternoon breakout sessions address crucial topics for producers. Jake Hlas will share how tagging technology improves herd management, while climatology specialist Madelynn Wuestenberg will guide producers on using Iowa’s past weather data for climate forecasting.
Randie Culbertson, cow-calf specialist, will tackle the pressing question of whether producers should consider herd expansion.
Doors open at 8 a.m., and the program begins at 9 a.m. Admission is free, and no preregistration is required. This engaging event provides a perfect platform for producers to gain insights, learn innovative practices, and connect with industry experts.
