Various wine workshops will be held for both grape and wine industry members and consumers in the coming months by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach's Aude Watrelot, an assistant professor of enology in the department of food science and human nutrition.
Industry members are invited to attend two workshops in person at the Iowa State campus, while Wine Wednesdays will be offered for consumers online through WebEx. All events are free but will require registration.
The workshops intended for industry members will be held in person at the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition on the Iowa State Campus. The first workshop, set for March 17, will cover sulfur dioxide management. A maximum of 20 participants may enroll, and the workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The second workshop, set for April 9, will cover oxidation and phenolics in wine. As with the previous event, a maximum of 20 participants may enroll, and the workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"The workshops for the grape and wine industry members are offered to provide them knowledge on the importance of appropriate management of sulfur dioxide and tools for the prevention of oxidation in winemaking," said Watrelot. "These two workshops are intended to help improve and develop winemaking practices on cold-hardy grape wines."
Wine Wednesdays will also be offered for consumers looking to learn more about wine. The workshops will cover various aspects of Iowa wine, including grapes, wines and wine tasting. Participants are also invited to purchase a featured wine of the day from a participating winery, which will then be discussed during the workshop. These workshops will be held from 6-7 p.m. and will be entirely online. Wine Wednesday workshops are set for April 6, April 13, April 20 and April 27, and each event will be limited to 30 participants.
"The Wine Wednesdays virtual workshops are for anyone interested in learning more about the specificity of Iowa grapes and wines," said Watrelot. "Including a winemaker from Iowa during each workshop will help to create relationships between the Iowa grape and wine industry and consumers. It will also help in developing the awareness and knowledge of consumers regarding Iowa local wines," explained Watrelot.
