Webinar: Redefining the Field Edge to Improve Row Crop Profitability

The Iowa Learning Farms conservation webinar taking place Feb. 16 at noon CST will feature Mark Licht, extension cropping systems specialist at Iowa State University. Licht focuses on identifying and teaching about holistic approaches to managing Iowa cropping systems to achieve productivity, profitability and environmental goals. His research is centered around varied aspects of soybean, corn and cover crop management.

Iowa Learning Farms is part of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach.

In the webinar, "Redefining the Field Edge Case Studies," Licht will utilize case study materials that have been developed to aid in understanding the short- and long-term impacts of different management practices. He will highlight an approach to identifying unprofitable sub-field areas and ways that conversion of those areas from row crops to perennials can increase whole field profitability while also delivering water quality and wildlife benefits. In this session, Licht will focus on flood-prone areas that are often not profitable.

"With the approaches in this case study, we ask farmers to take a different and sometimes more creative look at how they define the edges of a field," said Licht. "Through this approach, we hope to help them achieve long-term profitability by converting these areas to perennials. The case study resources provide information and practice recommendations that we hope will spur some new ideas about how field boundaries can be changed in ways that can provide multifaceted benefits including increased profitability, better water quality and greater wildlife habitat."

Participants in Iowa Learning Farms Conservation Webinars are encouraged to ask questions of the presenters. People from all backgrounds and areas of interest are encouraged to join.
