Iowa State University has named Scott Heuchelin as the next director of its Seed Science Center, beginning July 15, 2025. A former student and faculty member at Iowa State, Heuchelin brings more than two decades of global experience in seed health and regulatory systems to his new leadership role.
The Seed Science Center, part of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, is known globally for its research, education, and comprehensive seed testing services. It is home to the world’s largest public seed lab and plays a critical role in the National Seed Health System, ensuring U.S. seeds are disease-free for export.
Heuchelin, who holds a master’s and Ph.D. in plant pathology from Iowa State, returns after a successful 22-year career with Corteva Agriscience. There, he served as global phytosanitary risk mitigation lead, working with international partners on disease prevention, quarantine protocols, and seed inspection policies.
“I am thrilled to join the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences as the director of the Seed Science Center,” said Heuchelin. “The Center has a great history of education, training, and service, and I look forward to expanding those efforts using my experience in seed development and advocacy.”
Daniel J. Robison, endowed dean of the college, praised Heuchelin’s leadership and commitment to translating science into practice.
He also thanked former interim directors Dr. Steve Harris and Dr. Lulu Rodriguez, who served after longtime director Dr. Manjit Misra stepped down.
Steve Harris, chair of the Department of Plant Pathology, Entomology and Microbiology, emphasized Heuchelin’s ability to bridge academic goals with industry needs.
“Scott’s global perspective and industry background will help shape the future of the Seed Science Center,” Harris said.
With Heuchelin at the helm, Iowa State’s Seed Science Center is set to continue its global leadership in seed technology and research.
