Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Dairy Team is preparing to host the third annual Iowa Dairy Industry Doubleheader on October 30 and 31. The two-day event will offer educational opportunities, professional development, and networking activities for dairy producers, veterinarians, students, and industry professionals.
The event aims to bring together members of the dairy and livestock sector to learn about current industry challenges, strengthen professional relationships, and share knowledge. Activities will be held at the Iowa State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) in Ames.
The first day of the program will focus on veterinary education and training. Participants will have the opportunity to attend presentations, hands-on laboratory activities, and discussions addressing emerging parasite threats and biosecurity preparedness. An optional tour of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will also be available, providing practical information on sample submission and diagnostic services.
A key feature of the workshop will be a hands-on parasitology laboratory where attendees can improve their skills in identifying and understanding parasite-related issues affecting livestock. The program will also include a tabletop biosecurity exercise that allows veterinarians from beef, dairy, and mixed-animal practices to work through response scenarios and discuss best management practices.
Dr. Phillip Jardon, Clinical Associate Professor and Dairy Extension Veterinarian at Iowa State University, emphasized the value of the interactive format.
“The program will provide four hours of meaningful continuing education credits approved by both the Iowa Board of Veterinary Medicine and the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists,” said Dr. Phillip Jardon, clinical associate professor and dairy extension veterinarian at Iowa State. “We built the afternoon around interaction and hands-on activity because we believe attendees will learn this material best by working through it.”
The educational program will conclude with an ice cream social, giving participants an additional opportunity to connect with fellow professionals and exchange ideas.
The second day will feature the Iowa Dairy Industry Tailgate, a relaxed event designed to celebrate the dairy community and encourage networking among students, alumni, faculty members, producers, and industry representatives. Attendees will enjoy food, refreshments, and opportunities to build new professional connections before the Iowa State Cyclones football game.
The Iowa State Dairy Science Club will also host its annual alumni reunion during the tailgate, creating a welcoming environment for former students and industry supporters. For those not attending the football game, a game watch party will be available at the VDL, and parking accommodations will be provided.

The Iowa Dairy Industry Doubleheader highlights the importance of continuous learning, industry collaboration, and community engagement. By combining professional education with networking opportunities, the event will help support the growth and success of Iowa's dairy sector while strengthening connections among those who contribute to the industry.
