Plan ahead to control insects in livestock facilities

Planning for insect control in livestock barns is crucial to prevent losses and ensure the health of animals.

A new publication, Integrated Pest Management in Swine Production Facilities, by Iowa State University and the Iowa Pork Industry Center, outlines best practices for pest management.

Chris Rademacher, a swine veterinarian and co-author, highlights the importance of early planning to manage insects before they cause problems. “A comprehensive approach to insect pest management is necessary well in advance of marketing pigs,” he stated.

The guide emphasizes managing barn surroundings, including trimming grass, maintaining trees, and addressing ponds to reduce insect attraction.

Inside barns, producers should inspect light fixtures, water sprinklers, and curtains for potential insect breeding grounds. Identifying specific insect issues is key to implementing effective solutions, often requiring professional advice.

The document draws insights from experts in entomology, pest management, agricultural engineering, and experienced producers. Rademacher notes, “This guide helps producers create plans based on the life cycles of pests to minimize their impact effectively.”

Other contributors include Laura Greiner, Brett Ramirez, and Lee Cohnstaedt, who bring expertise in animal science, agricultural engineering, and entomology. Together, they provide a holistic approach to pest control for swine production.

The publication, IPIC 209A, is available for free through the ISU Extension and Outreach Store. Livestock producers are encouraged to use this guide to create proactive, integrated pest management strategies that safeguard animal health and production efficiency.

By acting early and following expert recommendations, farmers can prevent costly insect problems and maintain a healthy environment for their livestock.
