Pen To Pasture Event Brings Animal Science Learning For Students

By Andi Anderson

The Pen to Pasture event is a one-day educational program designed to introduce students to the exciting field of animal science. Scheduled on June 9, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., this event will be held at the Decatur County Extension Office in Leon, Iowa. It aims to provide practical knowledge and hands-on learning experiences for students from 4th grade to 12th grade.

This program focuses on helping students understand important topics such as animal breeds, anatomy, and the various by-products obtained from livestock. These concepts are explained through simple and interactive methods, making learning easier and more enjoyable for participants. The event encourages students to connect classroom knowledge with real-life agricultural practices.

One of the key highlights of the event is its engaging activities. Students will have the opportunity to participate in livestock judging, where they will learn how to evaluate animals based on specific traits. Other activities include a quiz bowl and a skillathon, which test students’ knowledge and understanding in fun and educational ways. These activities help develop critical thinking and decision-making skills.

The event also focuses on career awareness. Students will learn about different opportunities in the agricultural and animal science fields. This exposure helps them explore future career paths and understand the importance of agriculture in everyday life.

The participation fee for the program is $15, making it affordable for many students. Interested participants or parents can contact Cassandra Martin at (641) 446-4723 for more information or assistance with registration.
