Iowa Corn Supports Agriculture Literacy Programs For Students And Teachers

By Andi Anderson

Iowa Corn plays an important role in supporting agriculture education across the state. Corn is a major part of Iowa’s economy and daily life, and educating people about it helps both farmers and consumers understand its value. To achieve this, the Iowa Corn Promotion Board actively invests in programs that improve agriculture literacy.

One key program is the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation (IALF), established in 2013. This organization works to help students understand the importance of agriculture not only within Iowa but across the world. It serves as a valuable resource for educators by connecting agriculture topics with science and social studies standards. This approach makes learning more practical, interesting, and relevant for students.

IALF focuses on three main goals. It works to build trust among educators by providing reliable information about agriculture. It also ensures effective operations through strong partnerships and development. In addition, it collaborates with community members and educators to promote a positive message about agriculture.

One of its major initiatives is Read Across Iowa, held every March. During this program, agriculture-related books and classroom resources are distributed to schools across the state. These books help students connect reading with real-life farming concepts. Each year, a new theme is chosen. One recent theme, Pollinators to Product, highlights the role of pollinators in agriculture and shows how they contribute to everyday products.

IALF also manages the Agriculture in the Classroom program. This initiative helps teachers include agriculture topics in their regular lessons, including science, social studies, language arts, and nutrition. It ensures that students learn about farming while studying their core subjects.

In addition, IALF provides professional development for teachers. Workshops, farm visits, and practical experiences help teachers gain accurate and modern knowledge about agriculture. These activities help educators confidently teach students about current farming practices.

The Iowa Corn Promotion Board has supported IALF for many years. By participating in programs, partnerships, and educational activities, Iowa Corn ensures that agriculture education remains accurate and meaningful. This support helps build awareness and shapes future generations with a better understanding of agriculture.
