Mike Naig Talks Agriculture Future and Potential Governor Run

Mike Naig Talks Agriculture Future and Potential Governor Run

By Andi Anderson

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig is considering a run for governor in 2026 but says he is still discussing the idea with his family, friends, and supporters. Speaking on “Iowa Press,” Naig said Governor Kim Reynolds’ decision not to seek reelection surprised him, leading him to consider his next steps in public service.

For now, Naig emphasized that talks remain informal and personal. He shared that he will reflect on the decision during the upcoming planting season, and believes Iowa Republicans have a strong lineup of potential candidates.

On agricultural issues, Naig said the Iowa farm economy is tough, with farmers now facing smaller profit margins than during previous trade wars. He stressed the need for better trade deals and domestic growth in the ethanol and sustainable aviation fuel industries. Naig sees new trade negotiations, particularly with India, as potential game changers.

Addressing the bird flu outbreak, which has affected over 168 million birds nationwide, Naig said he is now open to considering vaccinations, an option he had previously ruled out. He also called for stronger staffing in the animal health sectors of USDA and APHIS to manage future outbreaks better.

Naig advocated for making the Choose Iowa program permanent. This initiative supports local farmers by helping schools and institutions purchase Iowa-grown food, replacing expiring federal programs.

Finally, on eminent domain, especially regarding carbon pipeline projects, Naig emphasized it should be used rarely and only with overwhelming voluntary agreements.

Overall, Mike Naig highlighted the challenges farmers face while reinforcing his commitment to supporting Iowa’s agricultural future, whether as Secretary or possibly as Governor.
