Iowa youth shine in dairy quiz bowl

By Andi Anderson

Recently, teams from Delaware, Dubuque, and Fayette counties gathered at Starmont High School in Arlington for the Dairy Quiz Bowl. Thirty-four 4-H youth participated, answering questions on dairy production, nutrition, and anatomy, highlighting their extensive knowledge.

Celine Beggs-Shoemaker, a 4-H animal science education specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, described the event: "The Dairy Quiz Bowl is an engaging event that encourages young people to learn and showcase their knowledge about dairy production, animal science and the industry in a fun, interactive competition."

A combined team of Fayette and Dubuque County youth won the grand champion title. The victorious team members were Aaron Steward, Wyatt Schmitt, Adley Rahe, and Carson Rauen.

In the intermediate category, Fayette County clinched victory with participants James Steward, Gracie Walz, Chloe Sparrgrove, and Lily Holthaus.

The senior division was also dominated by Fayette County, with team members Ethan Palmer, Natalie Hamlett, Blake Sparrgrove, and Hannah Scott leading the way.

Each competitor also took a written exam before the quiz bowl, which helped seed the teams and contributed to the overall scores. Top scorers included Adley Rahe in the junior division, Karl Zumbach in the intermediate division, and Ethan Palmer in the senior division.

This event not only tested their knowledge but also offered the senior team winners an opportunity to compete in the National Dairy Quiz Bowl in Louisville, Kentucky, this November.
