Iowa teacher honored for promoting agricultural literacy

Kerri Bell, a second-grade teacher at Mid-Prairie East Elementary School in Kalona, Iowa, has been awarded the Iowa Excellence in Teaching About Agriculture award.

This prestigious honor, presented by the Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation (IALF), celebrates educators who effectively incorporate agricultural concepts into their curriculum, connecting students with Iowa’s farming heritage.

With 30 years of teaching experience, Bell integrates the National Agricultural Literacy Outcomes (NALOs) into her lessons. She uses programs like Adopt-a-Farmer to teach students about sustainable farming and the importance of livestock in food production.

Her curriculum also includes activities on environmental conservation and natural resource management, helping students understand farming's impact on their daily lives.

“Kerri exemplifies how agriculture can be seamlessly integrated into classroom learning,” said Kelly Foss, IALF Executive Director. “Her dedication inspires students to appreciate farming and its role in sustaining communities while addressing real-world challenges.”

Bell actively engages in IALF workshops and collaborates with local organizations like Washington County 4-H, Mid-Prairie FFA, and the Iowa Corn Growers Association to bring agricultural leaders and experiences to her students.

These partnerships enhance her lessons and provide students with hands-on learning opportunities.

As part of her recognition, Bell will receive a $500 stipend to further incorporate agriculture into her teaching and attend the National Agriculture in the Classroom conference in Minneapolis in June 2025.

Bell’s work highlights the importance of teaching agricultural literacy to future generations. Through her efforts, she ensures students not only understand farming's significance but also its role in addressing global challenges and sustaining communities.

Her contributions align with IALF's mission to empower students with agricultural knowledge and appreciation.
