Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has extended the state’s Harvest Proclamation, providing flexibility in weight limits for vehicles transporting agricultural materials. This extension is effective immediately and will remain in place until February 6, 2025.
Under this proclamation, vehicles carrying corn, soybeans, hay, straw, silage, stover, fertilizer (dry, liquid, and gas), and manure (dry and liquid) can exceed normal weight limits without requiring special permits. The maximum gross weight for these vehicles is capped at 90,000 pounds.
The relaxed regulations apply to all Iowa highways, excluding the interstate system. However, vehicles must comply with certain conditions.
They cannot exceed the maximum axle weight limit of 20,000 pounds or the legal maximum gross weight table limits by more than 12.5 percent as outlined in Iowa Code § 321.463 (6) (b). Additionally, drivers must adhere to posted weight limits on roads and bridges.
This extension aims to support Iowa's agricultural sector by easing transportation challenges during the busy harvest season. It ensures the efficient movement of essential materials like grain, fertilizer, and manure, which are critical for farming operations.
Governor Reynolds' proclamation highlights the state’s commitment to assisting farmers and agricultural businesses in managing their workloads effectively. These temporary measures provide essential relief to industry while maintaining road safety and infrastructure standards.
Farmers and transporters are encouraged to review the specific weight and route requirements under this proclamation to ensure compliance.
