Highly pathogenic avian influenza found in Iowa backyard flock

Highly pathogenic avian influenza found in Iowa backyard flock

By Andi Anderson

The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, alongside the USDA APHIS, has confirmed the first case of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1 HPAI) in a multi-species backyard flock in Clinton County, Iowa, for 2025.

This virus, known for its severe impact on domestic birds like chickens and turkeys, is often transmitted by wild birds that may carry the disease without showing symptoms.

H5N1 HPAI has previously affected other livestock. In June 2024, 13 cases were detected in Iowa dairy herds, which recovered with minimal mortality due to supportive care.

Heightened Biosecurity

Poultry producers and livestock farmers in Iowa are encouraged to strengthen biosecurity protocols to safeguard their animals. Resources are available on the Iowa Department of Agriculture’s website for guidance on implementing effective measures.

Recognizing symptoms poultry owners should watch for the following symptoms in birds:

  • Sudden, unexplained bird deaths
  • Lethargy and reduced appetite
  • Decreased egg production or misshapen eggs
  • Swelling or discoloration of head and legs
  • Respiratory issues like coughing or nasal discharge
  • Diarrhea or difficulty walking

Suspected cases must be reported immediately to a veterinarian or the Iowa Department of Agriculture at (515) 281-5305.

Public Health and Food Safety

The CDC states the risk to the general public remains low. Eggs and poultry products are safe to consume when cooked to an internal temperature of 165°F.

Reporting Sick Wildlife

The Iowa DNR urges reporting clusters of sick or deceased wild birds to local wildlife authorities. People are advised not to approach or handle these birds.

For more updates, confirmed cases are tracked on the USDA APHIS website, ensuring transparency and timely information for producers and the public.
