Nine students from the Iowa State Beef Leadership Fellows program attended CattleCon 2025 in San Antonio, Texas. Accompanied by faculty members, they gained valuable insights into beef industry trends, leadership, and networking opportunities.
Students explored key topics, including cattle genetics, data-driven decision-making, and policy impacts on the industry. Senior Matt Brinkman highlighted the importance of networking and innovation, emphasizing how data collection can improve breeding decisions.
Sophomore Grant Boyd appreciated learning about Texas’s cattle industry while recognizing the importance of collaboration among producers.
Visiting top cattle operations, including 44 Farms and BRC Ranch, provided firsthand exposure to different production systems.
These tours showcased cutting-edge breeding techniques, large-scale marketing strategies, and challenges such as predator management. Students also observed the prominence of Brahman cattle in Texas, which differs from beef production in Iowa.
Dr. Brad Skaar, a faculty leader on the trip, emphasized the program's goal of exposing students to decision-making in the beef industry. He noted that the event created opportunities for internships and career growth. “These students represent the future leadership in the beef industry,” he stated.
This experience allowed students to connect with industry professionals, expand their knowledge, and bring fresh ideas back to Iowa State. Those interested in joining future Beef Leadership Fellows programs are encouraged to contact Dr. Skaar.
