Melanie Bloom, an agriculture teacher at Sioux Central High School in Sioux Rapids, has been named the 2025 Iowa Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made during a special school assembly, attended by Governor Kim Reynolds and other notable figures, celebrating her exceptional contributions to education.
With 16 years of teaching experience, Bloom established Sioux Central’s first full-time agriculture program and serves as the FFA advisor, inspiring students to excel in agricultural education and leadership. Her innovative teaching methods and dedication to student success have significantly impacted her school and community.
The Iowa Teacher of the Year Award, established in 1958, honors educators who excel in the classroom and make meaningful contributions to the education system. Bloom was selected from nine Regional Teacher of the Year finalists.
Iowa Department of Education Director McKenzie Snow praised Bloom for helping students meet high expectations and achieve their potential.
Bloom expressed her gratitude and surprise at receiving the award, sharing that her favorite teaching moments are when students solve problems and light up with understanding. Governor Reynolds highlighted testimonials from Bloom’s former students, showcasing her profound influence on their lives and careers.
Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig also acknowledged Bloom’s achievements, emphasizing the importance of her role in advancing agricultural education. Bloom’s efforts demonstrate her commitment to fostering student growth and ensuring the future success of Iowa’s agricultural sector.
