Farmers and livestock producers in Warren County and nearby areas are invited to a special Pasture Walk event on August 26 in New Virginia, Iowa. This late-afternoon gathering will focus on grazing practices that help maintain pasture health not only this season but for future use as well.
The event will be held at 22456 90th Avenue near Medora. Check-in begins at 5 p.m., and a light grilled meal will be provided by the Warren County Cattlemen. The event is free of charge, sponsored by ISU Extension and Outreach, the Warren County Farm Bureau, and the Iowa Forage and Grassland Council.
Pasture walks offer a relaxed, hands-on setting where producers can ask questions and learn directly from specialists. “This walk will be unique with some good visual aids and speakers with an array of expertise,” said Chris Clark, an Iowa State University Extension beef specialist.
Clark will be joined by forage specialist Shelby Gruss, extension agronomist Meaghan Anderson, and other beef experts. Together, they will lead discussions on grazing height management, fall rest periods to prepare for spring grazing, and fall weed control strategies.
A highlight of the event is the new “Grazing Trailer,” which includes pasture management tools and educational materials designed to help producers apply what they learn on their own farms.
Attendees are asked to register by August 25 to assist with meal planning. To sign up, call the ISU Extension and Outreach Warren County Office at 515-961-6237. Participants should bring a lawn chair, dress appropriately for the weather and walking, and note that there are no restroom facilities at the site.
This pasture walk offers a valuable opportunity for producers to gain useful, research-backed knowledge that can enhance their pasture productivity and livestock management.
