Field Day: Perennial Groundcover in Corn and Soybean Systems



Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host a field day at the Sorensen farm near Ames on Sept. 15, from noon to 3:30 p.m. The free event is open to farmers and landowners and includes a complimentary meal.

Perennial groundcover post harvest in the fall.Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about using perennials as groundcover within corn and soybean systems, view plots of perennial groundcover, hear system management and chemical suppression tips, and learn about economic opportunities perennial groundcover offers.

The field day will be held rain or shine at the Sorensen Farm south of Highway 30 on 240th St. between V and W Avenue on the north side of the road.

Lunch will be provided. To reserve your lunch, complete the online form.

Noon -- Lunch.

1 p.m. -- Overview and Rationale: Raj Raman, Morrill Professor of ag and biosystems engineering at Iowa State University.

1:20 p.m. -- System Management: Ken Moore, distinguished professor of agronomy, Iowa State University.

1:40 p.m. -- Grass Selection and Planting Tips: Roger Hintz, assistant scientist at Iowa State University.

2 p.m. -- Developing Systems with Easier Management (View Plots): Shui-zhang Fei, professor of horticulture at Iowa State.

2:20 p.m. -- Grass management with Herbicides: Corteva Agrisciences.

2:40 p.m. -- Soil Health and Nutrient Benefits: Dr. Dan Andersen, associate professor of ag and biosystems engineering, Iowa State University, and Gabby Meyers, graduate student at Iowa State.

3 p.m. -- Economics of Perennial Groundcover Systems: Cyndi Bartel, research scientist, Iowa State.
