Congressman Randy Feenstra (R-Hull) joined Power Up Iowa at Buena Vista University (BVU) in his home district Thursday, visiting the university's applied studies program. BVU's applied studies program prepares students for careers in the fields of agriculture and renewable energy.
"The Applied Studies Program at Buena Vista University is a great educational resource for young Iowans," said Congressman Feenstra. "This program offers students the opportunity to pursue careers in agriculture and renewable energy, which are two critical industries to our economy in Iowa. I am glad to see that this investment will help our students achieve their professional aspirations and benefit our families, farmers, and businesses in the 4th District and beyond."
Northwestern Iowa is home to the majority of the wind farms in the Hawkeye State, with further potential for growth on the horizon. The State of Iowa currently ranks 1st in the nation for renewable energy with 58% of electricity coming from wind, solar, and energy storage projects. The percentage of energy produced from renewable sources will continue to grow as more clean power projects are brought online throughout Iowa in the coming years.
Renewable power generation supports 5,200 jobs across the state. Wind turbine technicians and solar installers are two of the fastest-growing careers in the country, requiring only a two-year degree offered by several universities and community colleges across the state, including BVU.
"At Buena Vista University, we are excited about our growth in agriculture programming, and proud to play a key role in this region, helping tomorrow's leaders focus on goals and models surrounding the development of new energy technologies," said BVU President Brian Lenzmeier.
