Farm-focused anaerobic digestion conference set for November

Farm-focused anaerobic digestion conference set for November

By Andi Anderson

Anaerobic digestion, the natural breakdown of organic materials without oxygen, holds promise for the farming community. Recognizing its significance, the U.S. EPA Region 7 joins hands with Iowa State University and the University of Iowa for a forthcoming conference named "Anaerobic Digestion on the Farm". This aims to discuss its impact on rural areas and beyond.

Scheduled from Nov. 6-8 at Iowa State University, the conference offers a platform for stakeholders to share insights and address challenges related to anaerobic digestion facilities. Details about the agenda and registration can be found on EPA’s website.

Attendees can expect a series of presentations, panel discussions, and virtual tours of anaerobic digestion facilities. An exciting poster session is also in the lineup.

Leading the kickoff is Lisa Schulte Moore from Iowa State University, an expert on agriculture, ecology, and human-landscape interactions. Alongside her is Rod Snyder, appointed as the senior advisor for agriculture to the EPA in 2021, bringing in vast experience in agricultural and environmental policy.

Jerry Flint, who holds a crucial position with the National Pork Board, Marcelo Mena-Carrasco, CEO of the Global Methane Hub, and Rudi Roeslein, founder and CEO of Roeslein & Associates, will take center stage as keynote speakers. Their diverse backgrounds offer a comprehensive understanding of topics ranging from methane reduction commitments to innovations in capturing CO2.

With inputs like animal manure and food waste, anaerobic digestion yields methane-rich biogas and digestate. These can be transformed into a range of products from electricity to vehicle fuel, making this process a cornerstone for sustainable agriculture.
