Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, in collaboration with I-29 Moo University and the Northern Plains Forage Association, invites farmers, agronomists, and forage enthusiasts to the 2025 Forage Field Day on Thursday, July 31, at the Western Research and Demonstration Farm near Castana, Iowa.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and promises a day of education, field demonstrations, and interactive learning.
This year’s theme focuses on summer annuals, including how they can be used for silage, baleage, and grazing. Experts will present on grazing systems, interseeding into alfalfa, and the economics of heifer grazing.
Field demonstrations will showcase:
- Forage sorghum silage production
- Summer grazing setups
- Live nitrate and prussic acid testing
Participants can also join a forage and weed ID competition for prizes and receive tips from university researchers and industry leaders on breeding goals for sorghum and ways to extend alfalfa stand life.
“This field day is a great opportunity to see the versatility of summer annuals in action,” said Shelby Gruss, ISU forage specialist. “They’re flexible and help improve productivity and fill forage gaps.”
Registration is required by July 21. The fee is $20 per individual or $50 for farm or family groups (up to five people). Northern Plains Forage Association members can attend for free but must still pre-register.
The event includes a free lunch under the hoop barn and networking opportunities with experts and attendees. The farm is located at 36515 Highway E34, Castana, IA.
