Summer Fairs and Food Celebrate Iowa Farm Traditions

Summer Fairs and Food Celebrate Iowa Farm Traditions

By Andi Anderson

Summer in Iowa is more than sunny skies—it’s a time of celebration, connection, and showcasing the state’s rich agricultural roots. From county fairs to backyard barbecues, Iowans embrace local food and farm pride during these warm months.

Across Iowa, community festivals, Main Street parades, and family gatherings put local food front and center. Whether it’s sweet corn, pork chops, or craft brews, what’s on the table often comes straight from nearby farms.

These summertime traditions give people a chance to support local producers and learn more about how their food is grown.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig enjoys this season for the chance it brings to reconnect with communities and the people behind Iowa’s farming success.

He often visits county fairs, remembering his own youth showing livestock and enjoying the fun. For Naig, it’s also about making meaningful connections with families and farmers who represent the heart of Iowa agriculture.

One way Iowa is helping connect consumers with farmers is through programs like Choose Iowa, which encourages residents to buy and enjoy Iowa-made food.

A recent example is the Farm Store Crawl, which highlighted on-farm stores across the state. This event allowed people to shop directly from farmers and discover the variety and quality of Iowa products.

Naig says these programs—along with local farmers markets—make it easier than ever for Iowans to know where their food comes from. He calls it a “direct line from farm to table,” and a great reminder of Iowa agriculture’s value.

As the Fourth of July passes, there’s still plenty of summer left to enjoy Iowa’s fairs, flavors, and family fun. Whether you visit a local fairground or a roadside stand, every trip is a chance to celebrate Iowa farming and support the people who grow your food.
