Iowa State Livestock Judging Camp Draws Record Student Turnout

Iowa State Livestock Judging Camp Draws Record Student Turnout

By Andi Anderson

The 2025 Neal and Kitty Conover Livestock Judging Camp at Iowa State University saw a record-breaking turnout, with over 190 elementary to high school students participating from June 3 to 5.

This number marks a significant increase from last year’s 70 participants, reflecting growing interest in youth agricultural education.

Hosted by the Iowa State Livestock Judging Team and led by Will Taylor, assistant teaching professor in animal science, the camp introduced students to livestock judging while building essential skills such as critical thinking, leadership, communication, and decision-making.

Participants traveled across Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Minnesota to take part. Throughout the camp, students learned how to evaluate and rank livestock like cattle and sheep and present their reasoning clearly to a judge.

A highlight of the event was a mock contest, where students applied their new skills by judging eight livestock classes, delivering four sets of oral reasons, and answering two sets of questions. The camp was largely organized by Iowa State students who are members of the university's Livestock Judging Team.

They played a vital role as mentors, instructors, and leaders, also handling event logistics such as sponsorships, marketing, and material preparation.

“This camp is an investment in the future of the livestock and animal science industries,” said Taylor. “It gives students practical experience and a confidence boost that lasts far beyond the event.”

Long-time supporter Neal Conover, a 1969 animal science graduate and former team member, emphasized the value of the camp in developing future livestock professionals. “Getting young people enthused about livestock and judging has long-term positive impacts,” he said.

The camp’s success highlights its growing role in nurturing the next generation of agricultural leaders.
