Southwest Iowa producers are encouraged to attend a pasture walk event on July 1 at the Fremont County Fairgrounds in Sidney, hosted by Jake and Shane Smith.
This free evening program is a great opportunity for local farmers and ranchers to learn about practical grazing and pasture management strategies.
The event kicks off at 6 p.m. with a free supper served by the Fremont County Cattlemen. The program begins at 6:30 p.m., featuring expert speakers from Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).
Presenters include:
- Erika Lundy-Woolfolk, ISU Extension beef specialist
- Aaron Saeugling, ISU Extension field agronomist
- Lucas Forney, NRCS district conservationist
Topics covered will include:
- Pasture condition scoring
- Grazing management and weed control
- Pasture fertility and common forage insects
- USDA programs for pasture support
Following the presentations, attendees will take part in a guided walk through the Smiths’ nearby cattle pasture to see real-world examples of pasture health and management practices.
This program offers practical insights and tools to help improve forage productivity and pasture use throughout the grazing season.
Preregistration is required by June 25. To sign up, call 712-374-2351 or email xfremont@iastate.edu. Be sure to mention any dietary or special accommodation needs.
This event is offered at no cost to participants, thanks to support from ISU Extension, NRCS, and local partners. It is a great chance for producers to network, learn, and enhance pasture and livestock performance.
