Colombia reopens market to U.S. beef exports

Colombia reopens market to U.S. beef exports

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) has announced a significant trade victory as Colombia lifts its ban on U.S. beef from states previously affected by H5N1 in dairy cows. This update, marking the reinstatement of beef exports from 14 U.S. states, comes after extensive negotiations led by various USDA agencies.

Dan Halstrom, President and CEO of USMEF, expressed gratitude towards the USDA teams, particularly those in Bogota, for their relentless efforts in restoring full access. He also acknowledged the support from Colombian importers and customers who advocated for the resumption of trade.

Colombia, a key market for U.S. beef with monthly sales averaging $3 million before the ban, saw a drastic drop in purchases to less than $850,000 in July.

The lifting of restrictions is expected to revive U.S. beef’s presence in the Colombian market and meet the ongoing demands of its customers.

USMEF’s proactive engagement with other trading partners has also been instrumental in preventing similar trade barriers, highlighting the importance of continuous diplomatic efforts in maintaining and expanding U.S. meat exports globally. This development not only benefits U.S. beef producers but also strengthens the economic ties between the United States and Colombia.
