USDA allocates $466.5M for global food security

By Jamie Martin

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is dedicating $466.5 million to combat global hunger and foster agricultural development.

Announced by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack at the Clinton Global Initiative 2024, the funding supports the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program and the Food for Progress Program.

McGovern-Dole receives $248 million to deliver school meals and improve literacy in nine countries, benefiting around 1.2 million children. This initiative particularly focuses on girls' education, vital for community uplift.

Meanwhile, Food for Progress is allocated $218.5 million to advance agricultural systems in seven countries, promoting climate-smart practices and enhancing trade capabilities.

These initiatives not only provide direct food assistance but also encourage sustainable farming and economic growth in developing regions. The U.S., through these efforts, plays a crucial role in supporting international educational programs and improving global food security. Details on project allocations and further program information are available on the USDA’s official site.
