Monticello pig claims top boar title

Monticello pig claims top boar title

By Andi Anderson

A pig from Monticello has made headlines by winning the title of the Iowa State Fair’s “Biggest Boar.” Finnegan, a crossbred boar owned by Bryan and Tricia Britt, tipped the scales at a staggering 1,420 pounds, claiming the top spot in the competition on Thursday.

This impressive weight not only secured Finnegan the title but also set a new Iowa State Fair record, surpassing the previous record by 85 pounds. The former record stood at 1,335 pounds, making Finnegan’s achievement all the more remarkable.

Bryan Britt is no stranger to the Big Boar competition, having won in both 2019 and 2021 with his pigs, Captain and Irish Cowboy.

Britt shared that his goal in returning to the competition was to eventually bring a record-setting hog to the Iowa State Fair, a goal he has now achieved with Finnegan.

Finnegan is known for more than just his size; he’s described as “a big eater with a big attitude,” with a particular fondness for gummy bear candies. His appetite and personality have certainly contributed to his success and popularity at the fair.

The Reserve Champion title was awarded to the boar shown by Mya Boyle of Danbury, which weighed in at 1,114 pounds. While not setting a record, Boyle’s boar still impressed the judges and fairgoers alike.

The Iowa State Fair’s Big Boar contest is a long-standing tradition, showcasing some of the largest pigs in the state. This year’s competition was especially memorable with Finnegan’s record-breaking victory, continuing the tradition of excellence that Bryan Britt and his boars have brought to the fair.
