Kubik family receives Iowa farm environmental leader award

By Andi Anderson

On August 14, 2024, during the Iowa State Fair, the Kubik family from Tama County was recognized with the prestigious Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award.

This award, presented by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg, Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig, and Department of Natural Resources Director Kayla Lyon, honors farmers who voluntarily adopt conservation practices to protect Iowa’s natural resources, including soil and water. A total of 44 Iowa farm families received the award this year.

The Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award acknowledges the leadership of farm families who implement various conservation practices, such as using cover crops, no-till farming, wetlands, bioreactors, saturated buffers, and grass waterways.

These practices not only improve water quality but also enhance soil health, supporting the goals of the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy. The award recipients serve as role models in their communities, inspiring other farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices.

Governor Reynolds emphasized the close connection between farming and environmental stewardship, commending the awardees for going above and beyond to protect Iowa’s natural resources. She praised their efforts in preserving the land for future generations.

Secretary Naig highlighted Iowa’s progress in conservation and water quality improvements, pointing to these farm families as examples of leadership in the farming community.

He expressed confidence in Iowa’s continued commitment to water quality and conservation efforts.

Ray and Alex Kubik, the award recipients from Traer, Iowa, operate a Century Farm and are known for hosting field days to showcase their conservation efforts. Their farm features pastures split into multiple paddocks with multispecies cover, allowing for extended grazing seasons.

These practices have evolved over time and continue to be used because they effectively reduce erosion and improve water quality.

Since its inception in 2012, 821 Iowa farm families have been honored with the Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award, which is awarded by a committee representing various conservation and agricultural organizations across the state.
